Almost invisible below the U of the main road 100m northeast of Sakya Gompa, Kaza’s longest-running hotel has completely renewed the bathrooms in this mud-built structure while maintaining the old log ceilings. Sleeping areas have been spruced up with decorative details and the L-shaped shared balcony-terrace is a lovely place to listen to birds roosting excitedly in the garden at sunset.

The lounge-restaurant is also appealing. Co-owned Kunpen Sakya, easily found directly west of the gompa, has bigger but less-atmospheric rooms. The same group includes another larger hotel and a comfortable year-round homestay. They can arrange a whole series of outdoor activities.

I rarely stay at the same hotel or guesthouse twice but Sakya Abode Kaza – Spiti Valley is one such place I love most that every time I am in Kaza, I stay only with Sakya Abode or Sakya Homestay or Kumphen. All of them are run by a gem of a person named Tsering who not only believes in cultural values of Spiti but respects the environment, tourism, and concern about doing his bit for the local society, equally. Out of all homestays in Spiti, it is one of the good ones.

Spiti Valley has its headquarters in Kaza and due to which it has a varied number of hotels or guest houses or homestays suiting to various budgeting needs. However, what makes Sakya Abode Kaza so special is that it is value for money, the locals running it are concerned about their surroundings respects it. bode Kaza or Sakya Home Stay any given day or time when you are in Spiti Valley. It is such a nice place to stay at a price on offer that we once awarded Sakya Abode, our DoW Community’s: Devil’s Den Award too. Along with Sakya Abode, Tsering also runs a couple of homestays by the name of Sakya Homestays and one hotel named Kumphen. The hotel Kumphen is almost there in the complex of Sakya Tangyud Monastery in Kaza. All of them are near each other and have separate kitchens. As I have said, there are many options of stay in Kaza, but today I will share my enriching experience of Sakya Abode and Sakya Homestays I had over the last few years of my visit to Spiti Valley.

What does Sakya Abode Offer?

Despite being popular among many travelers, Sakya Abode & its homestays continue to offer better and better quality topped with great hospitality with every passing year. Hats off to the dedication & efforts put in by Tsering & his team to continuously offer this enriching experience to the travelers in the Himalayas.

All this comes at a great VFM price range of Rs 1500-2000 per day based on the season and time you traveling. With the experience of staying at so many properties in the Himalayas over the last decade, I can easily say that it is quite decent in return for the enriching experience you live at Sakya Abode including the hospitality and support on offer to you. The only concern I see is the limited room sizes sometimes, and hence, if you are planning to fit in way too many in one room, it could be a difficult prospect. Max of three people will be OK with an extra bed on the floor. However, since it (including Homestays) is built on traditional grounds & architecture, it is much warmer than other properties run by Tsering in Kaza including Kumphen. I will start writing the detailed travel tale of my last winter trip to white Spiti Valley soon but before that let me share the detailed review of Sakya Abode Kaza today.

Piti Dharr International Ice Climbing Festival

These two words translate to something very unique and cherish-able for a lot of us. ‘Piti’ as the middle land of Spiti has always been called by the locals, stores a unique treasure in it’s season of ‘Dharr’ meaning ice. This festival is a gathering of folks who share a love for the unique medium. It is an attempt to share the learnings, experiences, stories in the best way possible. We could not have asked for a better start to Piti- Dharr 2019 which saw some of the best in the world teaching and spreading their knowledge of ice climbing with a small group of psyched individuals. We tried, failed, learned, climbed, enjoyed so much and that journey had to be put across in a film.

If you are driving your own car, the cost per person per day will be roughly between Rs1,500 to Rs4,000 inclusive of food and stay. For chauffeur driven cabs, I’ll suggest going with sakyabode.com or incrediblespiti.com. They have experienced local drivers from Spiti and are the best and the oldest travel agencies in the region. A package for four starts from Rs24,000 for 6 days (ex-Manali) and from Rs34,000 for 10 days (ex-Shimla) inclusive of transport, food and stay.

Spiti Valley Travel Guide: Meeting The High Himalayas

I have explored various parts of the Himalayas in India. The chardham in Uttarakhand, gardens and lakes of Kashmir, Buddhist ambience of Sikkim, amazing hospitality of Himachalis – the diversity and mountain environment make a rich experience. I have also been to high altitude places a few times but it was only in Spiti that I truly got acquainted with the ‘high’ Himalayas.

This was a trip where I spent 4 days completely in over 10000 ft. Snow clad peaks became common sight. To the extent that after 3 days, we even stopped clicking pics all the time, because every where we looked was a picture worthy, totally fantastic view.

Little Tibet

The proximity to Tibet and the geographical landscape makes this place unique. Tibetan plateau is the world’s highest plateau. And this geographical aspect is breath taking, because even at 15000 ft you feel like strolling on the rolling plateau and you are not on a conical shaped mountain terrain.

Moreover this is desert area – mountainous desert area which makes it a completely unique experience from the other mountains which are generally greener and wetter. There is also a difference in the rock and overall structure of the mountains.

I don’t know what all to write about this place, and also when I write this I am really concerned that increase in tourists in this remote area will not be good for it.

Kaza:

Here you are in the heart of Spiti desert. You can trek around if you have days. Or just take the car to little villages around. It is beautiful.

We visited a bunch of villages like Kibber, Key monastery, Hikkim, Komik and so on. There are even more villages like Chicham that you can visit if you have the time.

The Mountain Walker Diaries: Sakya Abode

We are at Sakya Abode, the Homestay of Tsering Bodh and his wife Tsering Dolma.
I am up and after drinking three glasses of hot water, I decided to come down to the kitchen and see if someone would rustle up some chai.

Tsering Dolma was up and about. She led me to a sitting room, warm, cozy and with a traditional iron Tandoor. She put some water to heat. “In the winters we get up by 7 in the morning. Summertime we get up by 5 because we have to work in the fields.”
